Why This Test Is Different

Four things you won't find together in any other free English test.

A real adaptive engine

Most free tests just count your correct answers. This one runs a statistical model (Rasch) that re-estimates your ability after every answer, then serves the question that sits exactly at your level.

It tells you how sure it is

Every result comes with a ± margin and a reliability score for each skill. We don't know of another free English test that shows you the limits of its own accuracy.

Every mistake explained

Afterwards, review each question you missed and exactly why the right answer is right. A $65 test won't give you that.

Five-Skill Adaptive Diagnostics

How the engine estimates your linguistic profile.

1

Adaptive Testing

Solve grammar, vocabulary and reading questions that shift difficulty based on your answers.

2

Listening & Speaking

Listen to a short passage and read a sentence aloud so the engine can estimate comprehension and fluency.

3

Why Nest English?

Lightweight engineering built for a quick, honest estimate.

Adaptive Difficulty

Each answer nudges the difficulty up or down, inspired by computer-adaptive testing concepts — a simplified version, not an official testing engine.

Browser-Native Speech

Uses your browser's built-in speech APIs for listening and speaking checks — no installs, no uploads. A typed fallback is offered if your browser doesn't support them.

Local-Only Privacy

Your answers, audio and history are processed and stored only inside your browser's local storage. Nothing is uploaded anywhere.

How We Calculate Your Estimate

Transparency about the adaptive methodology and its limits.

Adaptive Difficulty Ladder

A simple promote/demote ladder adjusts difficulty per answer. It is a simplified model, not a certified psychometric engine.

Public Alignment Tables

Your composite score is mapped to CEFR/IELTS/TOEFL-style ranges using publicly referenced comparison tables. Ranges are approximate and for guidance only.

Everything Stays On Your Device

Speech, answers and history stay in your browser whenever possible. Some browsers may use their own speech-recognition service, depending on browser and settings.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about the adaptive assessment engine and speaking practice.

Our engine uses scoring logic inspired by Item Response Theory and maps your performance onto publicly referenced CEFR, IELTS and TOEFL alignment tables. Because this runs in your browser without a proctor, treat the result as a helpful estimate, not a certified score.
No registration is required. The report is generated and packaged as a PDF locally in your browser, free of charge.
Results and progress stay in your browser. For speaking tasks, your browser's speech-recognition service may process audio according to the browser and its settings.
No. Use it as a quick self-check before you study. For academic admissions, visas or jobs, you still need an official proctored exam from the relevant provider.
It checks whether the browser recognized the words you said and how closely they match the reference text. It is a practice tool, not a professional pronunciation score.
Chrome and Edge usually give the smoothest speech-recognition experience. Keep your browser updated, allow microphone access, and use the latest version for best results.

    Our Story

    Why We Built Nest English

Most free English tests fall into one of two camps: short quizzes too brief to mean much, or longer tests that gate real feedback behind a sign-up form or a payment. We wanted something different — a genuinely adaptive diagnostic across five skills, with a report you can actually keep, that never asks for your email.

    Our Approach

A simple adaptive ladder adjusts difficulty per answer across grammar, vocabulary, reading, listening and speaking, then maps your composite score onto public CEFR/IELTS/TOEFL-style ranges — clearly labeled as an estimate, never as a certified score.

    What We Believe

Practice should respect your time and your privacy. No inflated stats, no fake testimonials, no data leaving your browser — just a tool that tells you, honestly, where you stand and what to practice next.

    Meet Professor Hoot

Professor Hoot is the wise little owl who guides the tour and keeps an eye on your streak. He never grades you, never judges a wrong answer, and — true to the species — is suspiciously alert if you happen to be studying between midnight and 4 AM.

Nest English is an independent project, built and maintained as a single self-contained file that runs entirely in your browser.

    How Your Score Is Calculated

No black box. Here is exactly how the engine turns your answers into a level estimate — so you can judge the result for yourself.

    1 A six-level adaptive ladder

Every question is tagged with one of six CEFR levels — A1, A2, B1, B2, C1 and C2. Answer correctly and the next question steps up a level; miss it and it steps down. This pinpoints your real level in fewer questions.

    2 A statistical best-fit estimate

Each question carries a difficulty score based on its CEFR level. Your result is the ability level that best explains your actual pattern of right and wrong answers — a Maximum Likelihood estimate — so a single lucky guess or slip barely moves it.

3 Five skills, then one score

Grammar, vocabulary, reading, listening and speaking are scored separately, then averaged into a single overall percentage. Skipping a module simply leaves it out of the average.

    4 Mapped onto public scales

Your overall percentage is mapped onto publicly referenced CEFR bands and approximate IELTS/TOEFL ranges, shown in the table below.

    5 A confidence margin

A ± margin is estimated from how many questions you answered and how consistent your skills were. More questions and more even skills produce a tighter, more reliable range.

    Score → level mapping

Overall % CEFR IELTS TOEFL iBT
    0–19A12.0–3.00–30
    20–39A23.5–4.031–44
    40–54B14.5–5.045–58
    55–69B25.5–6.559–78
    70–84C17.0–7.579–95
    85–100C28.0–9.096–120

These mappings are approximate public comparisons for self-guidance only. Nest English is independent and not affiliated with Cambridge, IELTS, ETS/TOEFL or any official provider, and its estimate is not a certified score.

    Privacy

    Your Privacy & Your Data

Privacy isn't a setting here — it's the architecture. Nest English is a single file that runs entirely on your device.

    Everything stays on your device

There is no backend. Your answers, score and report are generated locally and never leave your browser.

    No account, ever

No email, no sign-up, no login. You can use every feature without identifying yourself.

    No tracking, no ads

No analytics, no third-party trackers, nothing sold to anyone. There are no ads in this tool.

Your voice — the honest version

We never record, store or upload your audio. But in Chrome and Edge the browser's own speech engine uploads your recording to Google to turn it into text. That is the browser doing it, not us — and we would rather tell you than hide it. You can skip the speaking module entirely.

    AI features (third-party)

    Off

Turning this off means puter.js is never even downloaded. Turning it on lets Professor Hoot and the AI feedback work — and sends what you write to Puter.

    What is saved locally

Your XP, streak, test history, flashcard progress and settings are kept in this browser's local storage so your progress survives between visits. Clearing your browser data — or using the button below — removes all of it permanently. Export a backup first if you want to keep it.
